And while you’re at it, check out our interview with series producer Keisuke Kikuchi. If you’re interested on our thoughts regarding the remaster, hit up Neil’s review. Christophe Gans (who directed the Silent Hill film adaptation) had mentioned being attached to the project back in February 2020. And while the company currently doesn’t have any plans for new entries, series producer Keisuke Kikuchi states that the response to the Maiden of Black Water remaster has been more positive than what was initially expected.Īnd despite the reluctance (so far) to develop new entries, Koei Tecmo is still in the process of forging ahead with a live-action movie adaptation based on the franchise. Those sales cover the remaster’s release on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. Per Siliconera, the latest financial report for Koei Tecmo’s third quarter of the fiscal year states that the remake of Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water has now sold over 340,000 units worldwide since its release in December 2021. Still, if you can deal with its weirdness and shortcomings, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will be a scary good time.If you’re hoping for future entries in the Fatal Frame series, it would appear that things are headed in the right direction. Though Black Water doesn't have a stifling fixed perspective like those old games, it still has somewhat awkward movement which can sometimes make it hard to run away from the ghosts. Sadly, this comparison also applies to the movement controls. This kind of makes the game like one of the older Resident Evil games, but with more picture-taking than gunplay. You also can use the camera to find items that will solve some situational puzzles, such as a key that will unlock a door to a new area. But instead, you find a bunch of ghosts whose touch can really hurt, and the only thing that makes them stop is taking their picture with an old camera (and no, we don't mean an iPhone 3). The fifth game in this scary series, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is a freaky game where you have to explore a haunted mountain in hopes of finding a missing woman. If you can get past the silly "photographs hurt ghosts" mechanic, and the game's slightly clunky movement, this survival horror adventure may just scare the selfie out of you.
